A Delta style Airstream Rally, Like No Other!
From the beginning, there’s always been a vision to add an Airstream component amongst the sharecropper cabins which make up the Shacksdale Motel and The Shack Up Inn.
“We’ve always liked the novelty of the aluminum skinned trailers tucked next to these cypress cabins. Drive around the Delta and lots of the locals do too.” Owner Jeem Fields shares his thoughts as we drive through old communities like Friars Point and Moon Lake. “We get some really cool Airstreams and other vintage trailers come through here. I mean stuff you just don’t expect to see.”
He’s referring to the Shackdale Motel, which sits next to the ShackUp Inn, in the middle of the once booming cotton gin and sorting compound of the Hopson Plantation.
“It’s just a cotton field, but it’s everything you could image in an glamping spot!” Dan Castillo of Jelly Bean Travel Company adds, "I’ve been to state parks, national preserves, RV campgrounds and rallies all over this country. This place, The Shackdale Motel, has everything an Airstreamer has ever wanted, even without hook ups. It’s a game changer!”
What makes this place so special, is the collection of local talent, international tourists, scenic views, great stories and stunning sunsets. "It doesn’t matter which direction you point your nose, there’s something amazing to see and do all around you. It won’t take you long to figure out, the history of the Delta unfolds right here, in this very spot."
Pre and post Civil War eras merge at a place which used to be a part of the Hopson Plantation. The Hopson's were leaders in the mechanization of the cotton harvest.
“Of the 16 available cotton pickers, Mr. Hopson bought 13. He was aggressive and smart.” So began the migration of the the sharecroppers out of the Delta as families who had once been slaves, lost their jobs to progress and innovation. What they took with them were their stories, songs and deep concerns over their future and the music we call Blues, was born.
“Wanna know what Elvis was talking about when he sang ‘Going to a party at the county Jail…?” Look no further than the Delta.
“We aren’t gonna run utilities all over the place and create a parking lot. That’s not the type of atmosphere we are after. We’re going to preserve the perfect beauty and provide a venue you’re gonna wanna come back to every year. I come out here with my trailers, just to think and be inspired. There’s nothing like parking next to that cotton and just enjoying the sunrise, the clouds and the rainbows ... and there's always music here. Why mess that up?”
And so Jelly Bean Travel Company and the the Shacksdale Motel have come up with 32 view inspired locations to park your Airstream. Paired with a Delta Party and a Blues Music Venue it should be a weekend to remember. "It’s what I hear thousands of Airstreamers on Facebook pages like Airstream Addicts, Crazies and Full Timers talking about. A place with space to breathe. A place with culture and history. A place where something cool is going on."
"The Burdine Blues and Greens Festival is an authentic Mississippi Delta Party.” Hank Burdine, the event namesakes adds, "That means we’re gonna have good people, good food and great music. While we’re planning this thing, we got the Travel Channel, and Hollywood here filming documentaries and television shows. This is the birthplace of southern comfort food, southern hospitality and american blues and some of us ain’t forgot these old roots. It’s all coming back around and this is gonna be a party you don’t wanna miss.”
